What are UN Standard Containers?

The UN has drawn up a list of more than 6,000 hazardous substances classified-according to the risk that they represent. The UN approval describes the type of packaging to be used for the transport of hazardous substances. The certificate is issued by recognized material testing institutes. The manufacturer must guarantee that the product meets the specifications for the type of Containers and that the containers is manufactured and tested according to a quality assurance program recognized and monitored by the registration office. These containers must bear the quality assurance mark “UN Mark,” which guarantees safe transportation.

Containers bearing this “”UN Mark”” are referred to as UN Standard Containers. In principle, maritime transport (including export, import, and domestic transport) cannot be carried out without containers displaying the “”UN Mark.”” These containers are internationally recognized, and the certified containers are used for maritime transport. Hazardous materials stored in these containers can be reliably used not only by ships worldwide but also for land transport, air transport, storage, and other wide-ranging applications due to their impact resistance and chemical resistance.

Daikan can accommodate UN Approved Drums. Drums that meet the following inspection and testing standards are treated as UN Approved drums:

01 Drop Test

  1. Drop Height

    1. When conducting tests on containers intended for the storage of solids and liquids, the containers are filled with the substances to be transported or substitute substances with equivalent physical properties.

      Container Grade I II III
      Drop Height 1.8m 1.2m 0.8m
    2. When water is used as a substitute for liquids in containers:

      (a) When the specific gravity of the transported substance is 1.2 or less

      Container Grade I II III
      Drop Height 1.8m 1.2m 0.8m

      (b) When the specific gravity of the transported substance exceeds 1.2

      Container Grade I II III
Drop Height Specific Gravity×1.5m Specific Gravity×1.0m Specific Gravity×0.67m
  2. Drop Method

1st time: Diagonal drop with the top down, impacting the chime closest to the body weld
2nd time: Horizontal drop impacting the body weld

  3. Pass/Fail Criteria

    1. Liquids: No leakage after internal and external pressures have equalized.

Solids: Pass if all contents remain, even if the lid has deformed and no longer prevents leakage.

02 Airtightness Test

  1. All containers for storing liquids must undergo an airtightness test.
However, the inner containers of combination packaging are excluded from this requirement.

  2. Test Method: The container, including the stopper, is submerged in water while air pressure is applied inside the container. The holding time is 5 minutes.

  3. Pass/Fail Criteria: No leakage is allowed.

    Container Grade I II III
Applicable Pressure 30kPa or more 20kPa or more 20kPa or more

03 Hydrostatic Test

  1. All metal and composite containers intended for storing liquids must undergo a hydrostatic test.

    Container Grade I II III
    Applicable Pressure 250kPa 100kPa 100kPa
  2. For containers storing Class I hazardous materials, the test pressure should be 250 kPa.
However, for Class II and III hazardous materials, the pressure may vary based on the vapor pressure and the partial pressure of air or inert gas, but should not exceed a maximum of 100 kPa. The holding time is 5 minutes.

  3. Pass/Fail Criteria: No leakage.

04 Stacking Test

  1. All containers, except for bags, must undergo a stacking test.

  2. Test Method

    1. The test load is calculated using the following formula:

      W =(3-h)/ h × G
W: Weight of the container in kilograms
H: Height of the container in meters
G: Total weight of the hazardous material contained in the container in kilograms

    2. Load Application Time: 24 hours

  3. Pass/Fail Criteria

    1. No leakage.

No deterioration that could affect the safety of transport. No deformation that could compromise the stability of stacking.
